Black Space Winnipeg in partnership with the Winnipeg Film Group is proud to present the Second Annual 2019 Afro Prairie Film Festival in celebration of Black History Month, from February 21-24, 2019 at Winnipeg Cinematheque (100 Arthur St.).
The Afro Prairie Film Festival is the first Black film festival in the prairie region of Canada. This four day festival celebrates Black cinema across North America and promotes the work of established and emerging Black filmmakers from right here in Manitoba. Participants can look forward to a weekend filled with programming that explores Black narratives in filmmaking.
EVENTS & PROGRAMMING – Featuring Over 22 films: From Oscar-nominated features to emerging Black Canadian short films:
With over 22 films featured at this years’ Afro Prairie Film Festival, we are excited to offer a great lineup of premieres of new Black Cinema. On Thursday, February 21 our festival opens with a keynote from Ella Cooper, founder of Black Women Film! Canada, speaking about her career and the realities of being a Black woman in the film industry (generously sponsored by Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies UW).
On Friday, February 22 we are celebrating Black-French cinema in partnership with Alliance Française du Manitoba screening La vie de chateau (Chateau) and Boost – followed by our free opening reception featuring Alpha Toshineza and Spazz Like the DJ at our after party, with live music and refreshments, free and opened to the public (co-sponsored by Manitoba Music)
On Saturday, February 23, our Networking Luncheon for Women in Film provides guests opportunities to connect with local industry professional and a chance to network with host Ella Cooper, founder of Black Women Film! Canada and our visiting filmmaker Karen Chapman. Complimentary refreshments and snacks will be provided and this event is open to all those who identify as women (cis, trans or non-binary) – (generously sponsored by the University of Manitoba Women’s and Gender Studies Program)
From Oscar-nominated features to emerging Black Canadian short films we are screening over 22 films that explore Black narratives on screen directed by Black filmmakers. BlacKKKlansman, Little Woods, A Winter Tale, Hale County This Morning, This Evening are just a few films to name in a list of many including our program, The Dreamchasers: New Black Canadian Short Films in Competition named in memory of Winston W. Moxam and our closing event for the Afro Prairie Film Festival.
