DA DA DA DUNNNNN… perhaps the four most recognizable notes in classical music. Premiering in 1808, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is a riveting work requiring no introduction.
In 1824, Hector Berlioz composed his first full-scale composition, Messe solennelle. Berlioz claimed to have destroyed the entire score but the missing work was found in 1991 in an Antwerp church, with recent performances thrilling audiences with its poetic genius and bravado. Rounding out the evening is a new work from Canadian-Finnish composer Matthew Whittall.
