Sense of Place
The three artists exhibiting together in this show all have a deep connection to location and environment in their work. For Olivia Leader, a “sense of place” is a reminder, a feeling of familiarity that art creates in the viewer – and something she loves to see in their reactions to her work. To Jackie Turnbull, “a sense of place” involves flora and fauna (especially birds) of that locale. In all her work, the emotional energy of the subject matter is vital. And for Bonnie Hallman, as both a geographer and artist, a “sense of place” is understood in 2 ways: as a feeling of connection to a location, and the spirit or character inherent to a place or environment.
Olivia Leader
Artist Bios:
Olivia Leader employs a whimsical approach to creating an expression of joy through her art. She takes inspiration from nature’s colours and sounds. Olivia works in acrylic to create colourful botanical scenes.
Jackie Turnbull is a nature artist who paints in an impressionist and/or whimsical style. She expresses her great love of flora and fauna of various locales through acrylics on canvas accented with Aroic acrylic pen.
