SUMMARY:Brianna Wentz | Warpaint
DESCRIPTION:Brianna Wentz | Warpaint\nOctober 31 – December 14\, 2024\nVagina Witchcraft Performance: Thursday\, October 31st from 7:00-10:00pm\nOpening Reception: Friday\, November 1st from 5-9 pm\nArtist Talk and Livestream: Saturday\, November 2nd from 1-2 pm \nA symbol of sex\, controversy\, and rock n’ roll—excessive\, depraved\, and worshipped without restraint—the Demon embodies every freedom and whim denied to women and gender-diverse people. Warpaint releases the demon in the metalhead fangirl\, who is no longer a passive fan\, but a rockstar in their own right. Rather than being possessed by the music\, alluding to religious ecstasy and demonic possession\, the fan becomes the demon themselves\, challenging oppression and normativity in the scene.\nThis shift speaks to a deeper issue faced by Indigenous\, Black\, and other racialized people—the constant expectation to be strong and resilient. We are told we are resilient\, but why should we always have to be? Centuries of intergenerational trauma\, compounded by everyday racism and sexism\, demand a space where sorrow\, fear\, desire\, and rage can be unleashed. Enter metal\, punk\, and rock n’ roll.\nThese spaces provide an outlet for BIPOC and queer metalheads to build community and reclaim their identities. By honoring punk values\, kinship is cultivated\, because the mere presence of racialized and gender-diverse people in these scenes—and their very existence in a post-colonial society—is metal as fuck. Warpaint depicts these kin in all their unleashed deadliness.\nYet\, racialized women and non-binary people remain underrepresented in metal. Few figures exist in these scenes with whom they can identify. There continues to be undercurrents of white supremacy\, sexism\, and homophobia in factions of metal and punk. Black Metal\, known for its iconic corpse paint\, has been shaped by musicians who openly supported white supremacist ideologies and homophobic hate crimes. These works seek to confront and dismantle such ideologies by depicting the power of the bodies and spirits they seek to destroy.\nThrough this process\, the works in Warpaint empower them to ‘be their own heroes.’ As Leila Taylor writes in Darkly\, “the process of dehumanization is a process of monster-making. But monsters have power.” Being cast as the outsider has created a strength to confront\, reclaim\, and reshape metal by by embracing a raw\, deadly\, and unapologetically defiant spirit—showing that women\, non-binary\, and BIPOC voices lead the scene.

SUMMARY:Little Women
DESCRIPTION:“I want to do something extraordinary with my life.” – Jo \nIn 1860s Massachusetts\, Jo March and her sisters struggle to make ends meet while their father is serving in the Civil War. With societal pressures to get married\, Jo tries to forge her way as a young writer with bigger dreams. While Marmee bestows the virtue of self-sacrifice on her daughters\, Jo\, Meg\, Beth and Amy must learn to navigate the complicated and exciting world of adulthood. \nFilled with adventure\, heartbreak and a deep sense of hope\, the struggle of these “Little Women” has inspired generations of independent young women to trust their voice in a world trying to shape them. With buoyant and memorable characters\, this timeless classic is a perfect tale for the holiday season.

SUMMARY:Full Circle
DESCRIPTION:Artists: Dave Colvin & Leon Pewarchuk \nNovember 28 to December 17\, 2024 \nGallery Hours: Tuesday to Saturday\, 11am to 5pm. Evenings by appointment. \nFirst Friday\, extended hours\, December 6\, 11am to 9pm\, both artists in attendance both days. \nMeet the Artist times: Leon: Thursday\, Nov. 28\, 29\, 30; Tuesday Dec. 3\, 5\, 6\, 7\, Wednesday Dec. 11\, 13\, 14\, Tuesday Dec. 17. \nDave: Thursday\, Nov 28\, 29\, 30; Wednesday Dec. 4\, 6\, 7\, 10\, Thursday Dec. 12\, 13\, 14 & Tuesday\, Dec. 17 \nDeveloping from an unexpected reunion after 45 years without contact\, an art teacher and his student have come together for a joint exhibition. This unique showcase\, not only highlights their individual talents but also celebrates the enduring bond of friendship\, shared creativity\, and the power of reconnection. \nWith a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba\, Leon Pewarchuk became a teacher of Art\, Advertising Art and Graphic Design. In his 25 years of retirement\, he returned to painting with oil on canvas for his own pleasure\, inspired by his years at the cottage in Northwestern Ontario and his love of the outdoors. \nThrough his paintings\, he expresses his creativity with vibrant\, colourful landscapes drawn from his imagination and his real life visual experiences. The resulting work is both evocative and compelling. \nDave Colvin is an inveterate people-watcher. \nHis fascination with aspects of the human condition has been a constant throughout his life… as an artist\, playwright\, parent\, husband\, and clinician. \nAlthough geared toward a future in visual communications and illustration art\, his life took a decidedly different trajectory after high school\, which ultimately led to a long and satisfying career in the behavioral health field. As such\, he chooses to reflect human emotion through his artwork. \nFleshing out these emotional memories are key to the examination of Colvin’s art. \nGiven that yearning is said to be a blend of the primary emotions of love and sadness\, this is no small task. \nDave draws inspiration from the Early Netherlandish painting schools\, and creative sources as diverse as the outsider work of Henry Darger. The narrative compositions of Jessie Oonark\, Pieter Bruegel\, and the single-panel\, darkly comedic cartoons of Gahan Wilson. \nHis quasi-realistic pieces are also driven by dreams\, psychedelia\, and too many hours poring over Graphis magazines in Commercial Art class. \nColvin’s commission works hang in private collections across North America and the UK. He has also been short-listed multiple times in the Manitoba Society of Artists open juried competitions. \nCurrently\, atypical watercolour is his go-to\, but any combination of water-soluble media including acrylic\, acrylic pen\, India ink\, and gouache is fair game. \nDavid Colvin’s ARTIST STATEMENT \nAlthough my work is primarily representational and features hints of the surreal\, at the centre of all that I try to accomplish artistically\, is to evoke a measure of personal identification in the viewer.\nMy pieces are presented with buried narratives; unclear stories that will often be translated differently by each individual.\nI try to accomplish this by introducing dichotomies and visual metaphors\, such as holy men reveling while basilicas burn\, curling rocks made from jam cans\, errant tricycles lodged in tree canopies\, and tumbling umbrellas that twist through wind-whipped skies above darkened neighborhoods.\nThrough this exhibit\, it is my goal to evoke the emotional memories of those who see my work\, and to challenge them to look more carefully at their own worlds.
