SUMMARY:In the Shadow Beyond the Pines
DESCRIPTION:“Out here\, freaking out can get you killed. You just need to have faith. And besides\, this fire is sacred. It’ll keep us safe” – George \nSet in modern times but steeped in a dark and haunting past\, this atmospheric ghost story explores the shadows of Indigenous life and lore with a hint of humour. \nAmid the mysteries of the vast wilderness of northern Manitoba\, three young men wrestle with the loss of their friend by reclaiming the cultural practice of lighting a sacred fire. When they realize they’ve forgotten the flashlight and their phones have died\, legends and memories are all they have to guide them through the night. Created in the Pimootayowin Creators Circle\, this world premiere will draw you in while making no promises of letting you go.

DESCRIPTION:“If you’ve got a vision\, never give up control.” – Ted Rogers \nA David vs. Goliath story for a new age\, Rogers v. Rogers examines the merits of fighting back\, the cost of ambition\, and the complicated legacy of love and defiance in the shadow of power. \nTelecom tycoon Ted Rogers spent a lifetime turning Canada’s airwaves into money — and a company into a virtual monopoly. SUMMARY:Holland
DESCRIPTION:“Wow\, I think I signed less paperwork when we bought a house.” – Carrie \nThis world premiere is a hilarious madcap adventure\, an unflinching look at disability rights and a love letter to everyday heroes who will do anything for their people. \nCarrie and Paul are good people with solid friends and great kids. Another constant in their life is Alice\, an antagonistic social worker who holds all the cards when it comes to their disabled son. Alice makes promises but keeps few\, drowning the couple in paperwork\, denying basic services and bewildering them with impossible deadlines. Pushed to the brink\, Carrie takes matters into her own hands – in the most outrageous way possible – and goes from doing everything for her family to risking it all.

SUMMARY:Never Swim Alone by Daniel McIvor
DESCRIPTION:Two men enter a room. Two boys sit on a beach. They might be the same man\, and they might have been the same boy\, but it’s important that you know they are not. Two men\, mirror images\, haunted and bound by the boys they once were\, and a single moment during an endless summer.\nDaniel MacIvor’s dark comedy is a game of one-upping\, memory\, nostalgia and petty rivalry that bristles with tension and then explodes. A story about the one who wins\, and everyone and everything that gets left behind.\nWritten in 1991\, NEVER SWIM ALONE is eerily relevant today. \nFeaturing Jesse Bergen\, Ian Mikita\, Kerri Woloszyn\nDirected by Jane Walker\nStage Manager Kai Suzuki-Smith\nPresented by Snakeskin Jacket \nWednesday\, November 19 to Saturday\, November 22 at 7:30pm\nSunday\, November 23 at 2pm \nVideo Pool Media Arts Centre\n100 Arthur St

SUMMARY:A Number
DESCRIPTION:“A wonderfully unsettling triumph” – Independent \nWhat happens when you discover more than one YOU in the world? This psychological thriller explores themes of identity\, family dynamics and the ethics of scientific experimentation. \nBernard’s has contentedly navigated life as an only child. When his father reveals the truth about his place in the family order\, Bernard’s world is turned upside down. Father and son relationships can be complicated at the best of times but take on new meaning in a world where humans can be replicated. Caryl Churchill is at her unsettling best with this thought-provoking play about nature versus nurture\, the emotional impact of cloning and the moral implications of creating human beings for experimentation.

SUMMARY:VP: Temporal Landscapes - Video Commission Residency 2025 Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Video Pool Media Arts Centre is excited to announce an A/V presentation of three new video artworks created by the recipients of the Video Commission Residency for 2025! \nEvent Details:\nOpening: Friday\, September 19 | 7:00 – 10 PM (One Night only)\nLocation: Poolside Gallery \nVCR is a residency for the creation and exploration of experimental screen-based work. Featuring new work by Zoë LeBrun\, Ryan Hill & B.G-Osborne\, please join us for the premiere of these gorgeous new works. NOTE: The gallery installation/presentation will show the work in a unique way with the artists present. \nGallery Presentation is ONE NIGHT ONLY! \nNocturne – Zoë LeBrun\nUtilizing the ‘glitch’ as a portal into hidden worlds\, Nocturne explores the metaphors of nothingness embedded in darkness. It suggests that the indeterminate qualities of the unknown can provide revelations of wonder rather than existential dread\, and that we can move through the unknown while also carrying it with us. \nComputer-Assisted Simulation Technology for Optimizing Rivers – Ryan Hill\n“Computer-Assisted Simulation Technology for Optimizing Rivers” is about beavers managing the water and other resources in a location in southern Manitoba where two rivers connect. Through the construction of dams and lodges\, the landscape is transformed into one of greater productive value. \nPeripheral vision – BG Osborne\nPeripheral vision is an experiment with magnetic video recording and manipulation in order to promote media degradation/loss of information as signals are repeatedly translated between analog and digital. Through a transsexual and neurodivergent lens\, the artist explores the interplay between optic and social aberrations and expresses their anxieties about the alarming rise of surveillance and fascism in so-called canada.

SUMMARY:Soul Analog - Anthony Valade
DESCRIPTION:Part of the 2025 Scott Leroux Fund for Media Arts Exploration – Video Pool Media Arts Centre is pleased to announce the one-night-only public presentation soul analog by Anthony Valade\, recipient of the 2025 Scott Leroux Fund for Media Arts Exploration. The presentation will open with an artist talk\, presented in partnership with First Fridays. \nDate: September 5\, 2025\nTime: 6:00 – 9 PM\nArtist Talk: 6:00 – 7 PM\nLocation: The Output (2nd Floor\, 100 Arthur St.) \nDuring his residency\, he began by hunting down and watching the original tutorial and introductory videos for the legacy video mixers. He then spent the majority of his time exploring the feedback loop effects of each mixer and how those loops were affected by sending the signals back into the mix using different styles and eras of video cameras and television monitors. Toward the end of each day\, he would experiment with creating motion-activated effects by using parts of his body to further manipulate the feedback loop\, often resulting in fantastic\, unexpected visuals. He considers these explorations to have been very successful and plans to integrate his new findings into future projects. \nSoul-Analog is an interactive art installation experiment/artist talk that integrates vintage/retro video technologies and cameras in tandem with human interaction to create active motion murals of the “Soul” in the image presented. \nIn between viewings\, there will be live Analog VJ/video art demonstrations. \nPlease join us in VP’s Output Venue for an intimate opportunity to explore Anthony Valade’s research on the analogue video system.

SUMMARY:Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven's Fourth
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the brilliance of Ludwig van Beethoven with Beethoven’s Fourth\, a concert featuring guest conductor Leslie Suganandarajah\, Music Director of the Salzburg Landestheater. The evening begins with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s “Ballade in A minor\,” a work filled with passion and lush string moments\, influenced by his mentor\, Sir Edward Elgar. This piece\, full of high spirits and warmth\, offers a glimpse into Coleridge-Taylor’s potential had he lived longer. \nNext\, Walter Kaufmann’s Six Indian Miniatures provides a musical journey through the rich landscapes of India. Kaufmann\, WSO’s first Music Director\, composed these pieces after spending years in India writing film scores. These miniatures are musical postcards\, offering vivid depictions of East Indian scenes and culture. \nThe concert concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4\, a sparkling and joyful piece that often surprises audiences with its wit and charm. Sandwiched between the more famous Third (Eroica) and Fifth symphonies\, the Fourth Symphony is a hidden gem that showcases Beethoven’s lighter side and inventive spirit.
