At the age of seven\, Mitchell began playing the guitar to accompany his grandfather and brother as they played Metis fiddle tunes. Makoons continues to be an active member of the Manitoba Metis community and writes songs that combine traditional Ojibway music and culture with modern influences. In 2024 he was named the Manitoba Country Music Awards “Emerging Artist of The Year.”

Since 1996\, the group has been a Folklorama favourite\, known for their infectious blend of Calypso\, Reggae\, Latin\, Top 40 hits\, and original songs. \nWhether performing at Canada Day events\, private receptions\, or schools and daycares across the city\, the Paradize Band delivers sunshine and island vibes through every beat of their steel pans.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 8 am on August 22nd at the Exchange District CUBE stage (corner of King and William) for an exploration of our monthly CreativeMornings theme of NOMAD. Please bring your own chair if possible\, as seating is limited. \nWe are pleased to announce our August speaker: Daniel Hidalgo! \nDaniel is a single father and foster parent. He is the lifetime product of the child welfare system. Currently\, Daniel is employed as an action therapist\, where his focus is on the advocacy and support of Indigenous kids in care. He has always been employed in the human/social services field. He was also briefly a fire paramedic for the city of Winnipeg and has been actively involved in many of our city’s altruistic groups in a leadership capacity as a volunteer captain/medic. These groups include Mama Bear Clan\, OPK\, and Drag the Red. He is the Vice President of the Manitoba Harm Reduction Network. \nVery recently\, Daniel created his own grassroots non-profit volunteer group called “CommUNITY204”. The group is composed almost entirely of youth and adults who have been\, or currently are\, in CFS. Their goal is helping the marginalized community with access to basic human needs (water\, appropriate clothing\, hygiene products and food)\, harm reduction/minimization\, assurance of safety (through crisis intervention\, peacekeeping\, safe walks\, and search parties)\, Collaboration with other groups with the same mission (Thunderbirdz\, OPK\, Anishiative\, MBC\, BLM) relocation of residency\, and furniture donations/pick-ups. DESCRIPTION:Part of the 2025 Scott Leroux Fund for Media Arts Exploration – Video Pool Media Arts Centre is pleased to announce the one-night-only public presentation soul analog by Anthony Valade\, recipient of the 2025 Scott Leroux Fund for Media Arts Exploration. The presentation will open with an artist talk\, presented in partnership with First Fridays. \nDate: September 5\, 2025\nTime: 6:00 – 9 PM\nArtist Talk: 6:00 – 7 PM\nLocation: The Output (2nd Floor\, 100 Arthur St.) \nDuring his residency\, he began by hunting down and watching the original tutorial and introductory videos for the legacy video mixers. He then spent the majority of his time exploring the feedback loop effects of each mixer and how those loops were affected by sending the signals back into the mix using different styles and eras of video cameras and television monitors. Toward the end of each day\, he would experiment with creating motion-activated effects by using parts of his body to further manipulate the feedback loop\, often resulting in fantastic\, unexpected visuals. He considers these explorations to have been very successful and plans to integrate his new findings into future projects. \nSoul-Analog is an interactive art installation experiment/artist talk that integrates vintage/retro video technologies and cameras in tandem with human interaction to create active motion murals of the “Soul” in the image presented. \nIn between viewings\, there will be live Analog VJ/video art demonstrations. \nPlease join us in VP’s Output Venue for an intimate opportunity to explore Anthony Valade’s research on the analogue video system.

Dominated by a large glass installation\, activated by shifting light\, Through\, and through offers layered metaphors of passage\, boundary\, and reprieve. \nPlease join us at the opening reception on 12 September from 7PM – 9PM. \nEXHIBITION | 12 September – 15 November\, 2025\nOPENING RECEPTION | 12 September\, 7PM – 9PM\nWORKSHOP | 18 October\, 1PM – 4PM at MAWA in partnership with @MAWA \nWalking through a forest\, at times with a clear path\, at times blocked by undergrowth; moving branches aside to try to go further. Light travelling through coloured glass; light stopping at the edge of a dark opacity. A window grille; a chain link fence. A housing\, a boundary\, a porous shelter. \nThe stained glass artwork\, sculpture\, and photography presented in Through\, and through highlight notions of passage\, blockage\, and movement: what passes through\, what is not able to pass through. \nThe main gallery is dominated by a large glass installation that is activated by light\, which in turn fills the surrounding space. Indeed\, light is at the centre of this exhibition\, both physically and conceptually: the dappled light of forests\, the pre-digital glowing screens of stained glass\, projected and cast light. Light’s restoration of life\, magic\, and optimism. \nSmaller pieces throughout both galleries act as architectural ciphers. At times structural\, at times decorative\, these objects are ambiguous: a glass lattice could be a garden support\, it could be a dividing line. Through\, and through offers shifting\, overlapping metaphors: idyllic reverie\, reprieve\, entanglement in the woods\, looking for a way out. \nBIOGRAPHY\nSarah Ciurysek (MB) (she/her) is a Canadian settler artist exploring the relationships we have with the ground. Most often\, soil\, roots\, and branches figure prominently in large-scale photo installations\, though Sarah’s photo practice intersects more broadly with audio\, film and video\, and most recently\, glass. \nSarah’s artworks have been exhibited across Canada\, in the US\, UK\, Austria\, and in South Africa\, and she has completed residencies nationally and internationally at Radar and the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World (both England)\, Textílsetur Íslands (Iceland)\, and MASEREEL (Belgium). Sarah grew up in northern Alberta in Treaty 8 territory\, where she is researching decolonizing land use options as part of a long-term SSHRC research/creation project. She lives in Treaty 1 Territory in Winnipeg\, where she is an Associate Professor at the School of Art\, University of Manitoba.

It suggests that the indeterminate qualities of the unknown can provide revelations of wonder rather than existential dread\, and that we can move through the unknown while also carrying it with us. \nComputer-Assisted Simulation Technology for Optimizing Rivers – Ryan Hill\n“Computer-Assisted Simulation Technology for Optimizing Rivers” is about beavers managing the water and other resources in a location in southern Manitoba where two rivers connect. Through the construction of dams and lodges\, the landscape is transformed into one of greater productive value. \nPeripheral vision – BG Osborne\nPeripheral vision is an experiment with magnetic video recording and manipulation in order to promote media degradation/loss of information as signals are repeatedly translated between analog and digital. Through a transsexual and neurodivergent lens\, the artist explores the interplay between optic and social aberrations and expresses their anxieties about the alarming rise of surveillance and fascism in so-called canada.
