SUMMARY:201 Summer Concert Series: The Prairie Joggers - LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our final LIVE performance of the season with The Prairie Joggers scheduled at the plaza on Thursday\, August 29. The Prairie Joggers are a gritty folk-rock band out of Winnipeg\, Manitoba. Blending warm electric guitar\, raw vocals and dampened drums\, the Joggers form a thick vintage sound that cushions their bleak but not entirely hopeless lyrical themes. (Rain location: 201 Portage Concourse/Food Court).

SUMMARY:Outside of the Box
DESCRIPTION:Go down memory lane with JoAnne’s paintings\, influenced by her Icelandic heritage and life on a dairy farm in the fifties. She is very connected to nature which determines her choice of subject matter. \nJulia’s championing of women artists through the ages comes from her feeling of their sparse representation in the art world. That’s why they are created in the form of portraits. She came to know their stories while she painted them in her studio that is surrounded by her companion trees.

SUMMARY:Artisthood
DESCRIPTION:As a child I always felt I was able to express myself with art. Words were never my friend. Reading was never as enjoyable as it was to others\, math and most sciences were tolerated\, French and physics class were suffering. The only time I felt like I was intelligent\, confident and truly myself was when I was creating something. Over the years I have done a little bit of everything. I took up beading in high school and even sold my jewelry in some craft fairs. I studied and practiced photography during my undergrad and ventured into wedding photography. Theatre design allowed me to explore a large cross section of skills\, technical drafting\, model making\, costume rendering\, sculpting with form and even light. During the pandemic I sold paint poured coasters with a good friend. But all of these practices eventually turned into a chore. I enjoyed the process of creating and expression\, and still do. They truly brought me joy. But the product of my work was for others. The jewelry was made for others to wear. The photos were taken to celebrate others special days\, the set and costume designs were for others to act on and to wear\, the coasters were sold as a means during the pandemic. And that was enough\, for a while at least. \nWhen I became a mother\, that changed. Motherhood is hard. Motherhood during a global pandemic is even harder. I returned to work after 9 months of maternity leave with my first son. Four months later my father died. One month after that the world shut down and I was cut off from my creative outlet\, my job. Needless to say\, my mental health suffered. I didn’t realize how much I needed a creative outlet. It was during that time that I first picked up a pallet knife. I had always been intimidated by it\, thinking it was beyond my skill set. But as I spread the paint across a canvas for the first time\, it felt right. It felt like me. It is easy to lose yourself in motherhood and I definitely did for a while. Taking care of small humans consumes your identity and your time. In the rare instances when you do find time for yourself\, you are exhausted. When I take the time to paint\, I am taking back a piece of myself\, remembering who I am as an individual\, feeling at home\, enjoying something I am good at. It is meditative\, it brings me joy\, it brings me peace\, it brings me confidence. It is just for me. \nThere is nothing complicated about these paintings. There is no deeper meaning. I don’t have time for anything more than that. Ultimately what it comes down to is “I like to paint and flowers are pretty”.

SUMMARY:WNDX Festival of Moving Image
DESCRIPTION:Based in Winnipeg\, the WNDX Festival of Moving Image is a five-day experimental film festival lovingly cared for by Winnipeg and Prairie-region filmmakers and curators since 2005. \nAll events will take place at the Dave Barber Cinematheque\, the Black Lodge (the Winnipeg Film Group’s 3rd floor Artspace Studio)\, or the Manitoba Museum Auditorium. \nFestival highlights this year include: \nOpening Night Screening – Field Notes from a Rainy Day: The Animations\, Meditations and One Takes of Leslie Supnet – curated by Cecilia Araneda. This 50 min. program is the first-ever Manitoba retrospective for Supnet\, a Winnipeg Filipinx animator and one of Manitoba’s most accomplished filmmakers\, whose work has been selected by some of the most prestigious film festivals in the world\, including Toronto International Film Festival\, International Film Festival Rotterdam\, and the Flaherty NYC. Reception to follow in Artspace lobby for all ticket holders. \nInterdisciplinary performances by Anto(n) Astudillo and Freya Björg Olafson:\nTRANS THE MIRROR (2024)\,Canadian Premiere.A 20-minute performance by Brooklyn based Latinx artist and curator Anto(n) Astudillo\, on what it feels like to inhabit a trans/queer body in a world that has rendered their bodies as vulnerable. \nMÆ – Motion Aftereffect by Winnipeg’s own Freya Björg Olafson (20 min\, 2019) are digital collages of motion-capture data (both found online and uniquely generated); ready-made and custom 3D models alongside varied internet-sourced monologues. \nI Use to Live There (14 mins\, 2023)\, by Winnipeg-born\, Montreal-based\, Ryan McKenna\, Manitoba premiere. Blending documentary-style filmmaking with fictional elements\, the film stars Daniel Gerson and Monika Schneider as semi-fictionalized versions of themselves\, and focuses on the relationship between a photographer who is losing his vision due to a degenerative eye disease and the actress who hired him to take her new headshots. The film was selected as part of the TIFF’s 2023 Canada’s TOP TEN list\, and screened at Locarno International Film Festival\, Festival du Nouveau Cinéma\, and DOXA (among others)\nTerra Long’s’ feature documentary Feet in Water\, Head on Fire (90 mins\, 2023)\, Prairie Region premiere. An invisible line connects California to parts of the Middle East and North Africa\, where similar climates provide ideal growing conditions for date palm trees. Using textural 16mm\, Long surveys the arid California landscape along the San Andreas Fault—from microscopic plant cells to macroscopic pans of the golden mountains—and zooms in on the lives of those whose livelihoods are dependent on the trees’ sweet fruits and the exoticism they lend the region. Programmed by Jaimz Asmundson\, WNDX Festival Producer and Board Member\, for over a decade\, until his untimely death in early 2024. \nwndrland (50 min)\, 15 films from Ontario\, Manitoba\, Saskatchewan\, Quebec\, Yukon\, BC\, Germany\, Switzerland\, Brazil\, Italy/Netherlands\, and Argentina. This program has been curated for film lovers of all ages who are interested in films that reside outside of the big-box movie theatres! \nBack again – and always a filmmaker and audience fav – the One Take Super 8 Event. 5 participants are each given one roll of Super-8 film and a Super-8 camera to work with. The unedited results are revealed when the filmmakers see their work for the first time along with the audience! \nTickets for the opening night screening and reception are $10. Admission for all other screenings are pay-what-you-can ($5 recommended). Tickets are available for advance purchase at the Cinematheque\, through WNDX’s website – https://wndx.org/festival-program/ – or at the door. Full schedule can be found here – http://www.wndx.org

SUMMARY:First Fridays Art Talk: Art in Set Design\, with Set Designer Brian Perchaluk and Royal MTC’s Artistic Director Kelly Thornton
DESCRIPTION:Theatre set design creates a believable world for the audience to sink into\, engaging with the story\, characters\, and mood. The styles mirror familiar art movements such as Realism\, Impressionism and Minimalism. Expressionism\, in set design\, emphasizes the emotional experience of characters over a realistic depiction of their surrounding. The stage’s physical environment\, often altered or distorted\, uses lines and shapes such as uneven floors\, slanting walls\, or elongated forms to create a deep\, gut-level experience for the audience\, digging into the complexities of the human spirit and life. Moderator Susan Freig’s conversation with Brian Perchaluk and Kelly Thornton will explore the connection between art and set design\, and will go “behind the scenes” about the relationship between set designs\, director’s vision\, and production.

SUMMARY:The Ghosts We Create\, Anja Studer
DESCRIPTION:This newest series of work titled “the ghosts we create” was born in the summer of 2023 at the Venezia Contemporanea Residencies Program in Venice\, Italy. The series features mixed media paintings and papercuts inspired by wildlife and the pressing environmental challenges they face\, causing their numbers to diminish until they vanish. \nThe mixed media paintings feature abstract watercolor washes that loosely evoke landscapes\, playing with the dynamic between nature and emotion. The color washes are enriched with details in ink\, acrylics\, 24k gold and graphite. Each artwork includes a wildlife illustration in graphite. Opting for graphite instead of her usual medium of black ink emphasizes the fragility of our ecosystem and underscores the threat of wildlife extinction due to habitat loss\, exploitation and pollution. The wildlife illustrations consist of simple line drawings and geometric patterns inspired by folk art from all over the world\, and in particular Swiss papercuts. \nFor the first time the Swiss artist is unveiling a limited edition of papercuts as a homage to this old Swiss tradition. The artist has had a love for traditional Swiss papercuts ever since her childhood and her illustrations have long been inspired by this artform and were translated to ink. A workshop in Switzerland in 2018 gave her the needed confidence to explore papercutting within her art practice. Anja’s delicate papercuts depict wildlife in her distinctive graphic style using patterns. The patterns unravel into lines of paper\, echoing the message of wildlife being in danger of becoming extinct and disappearing in front of our eyes. \nThe artist continues to use her work to raise awareness about climate change\, urging action to protect our wildlife before more and more species vanish\, becoming ghosts of the past. \nAnja will be donating 10% of sales from this exhibition to the Manitoba-based Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre. Wildlife Haven’s main goal is to treat injured and orphaned wildlife and to successfully release them back into their natural habitat.

SUMMARY:Brianna Wentz | Warpaint
DESCRIPTION:Brianna Wentz | Warpaint\nOctober 31 – December 14\, 2024\nVagina Witchcraft Performance: Thursday\, October 31st from 7:00-10:00pm\nOpening Reception: Friday\, November 1st from 5-9 pm\nArtist Talk and Livestream: Saturday\, November 2nd from 1-2 pm \nA symbol of sex\, controversy\, and rock n’ roll—excessive\, depraved\, and worshipped without restraint—the Demon embodies every freedom and whim denied to women and gender-diverse people. Warpaint releases the demon in the metalhead fangirl\, who is no longer a passive fan\, but a rockstar in their own right. Rather than being possessed by the music\, alluding to religious ecstasy and demonic possession\, the fan becomes the demon themselves\, challenging oppression and normativity in the scene.\nThis shift speaks to a deeper issue faced by Indigenous\, Black\, and other racialized people—the constant expectation to be strong and resilient. We are told we are resilient\, but why should we always have to be? Centuries of intergenerational trauma\, compounded by everyday racism and sexism\, demand a space where sorrow\, fear\, desire\, and rage can be unleashed. Enter metal\, punk\, and rock n’ roll.\nThese spaces provide an outlet for BIPOC and queer metalheads to build community and reclaim their identities. By honoring punk values\, kinship is cultivated\, because the mere presence of racialized and gender-diverse people in these scenes—and their very existence in a post-colonial society—is metal as fuck. Warpaint depicts these kin in all their unleashed deadliness.\nYet\, racialized women and non-binary people remain underrepresented in metal. Few figures exist in these scenes with whom they can identify. There continues to be undercurrents of white supremacy\, sexism\, and homophobia in factions of metal and punk. Black Metal\, known for its iconic corpse paint\, has been shaped by musicians who openly supported white supremacist ideologies and homophobic hate crimes. These works seek to confront and dismantle such ideologies by depicting the power of the bodies and spirits they seek to destroy.\nThrough this process\, the works in Warpaint empower them to ‘be their own heroes.’ As Leila Taylor writes in Darkly\, “the process of dehumanization is a process of monster-making. But monsters have power.” Being cast as the outsider has created a strength to confront\, reclaim\, and reshape metal by by embracing a raw\, deadly\, and unapologetically defiant spirit—showing that women\, non-binary\, and BIPOC voices lead the scene.

SUMMARY:Kakanacisitacahk: Drumming Our Houses Home
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit brings to light our ongoing efforts to create sustainable\, community-friendly housing that incorporates energy solutions such as solar and wind. It also amplifies awareness of the housing crisis and the disproportional impacts for youth\, 2-Spirit\, and queer individuals within First Nations communities while tracing the historical and ongoing impacts of colonial policies that continue to shape housing conditions today. This exhibit is an opportunity to teach\, learn and grow together as we examine critical issues related to sustainable\, community-driven housing solutions. \nMade possible through the collaboration of our partners: the University of Manitoba\, the University of Saskatchewan\, and Nutana Collegiate’s Industry and Career Education (N.I.C.E.) program\, alongside Making the Shift. Together\, we strive to foster a deeper understanding of housing solutions and promote sustainable\, community-friendly housing projects.
