Sculptural Skateboarding Infrastructure Launches at Old Market Square

Permanent Skate Spot Debuts at Nuit Blanche in Winnipeg’s Historic District

The Exchange District BIZ is excited to announce the installation of Skate Spot, a new permanent skateboarding sculpture in Old Market Square, with an official launch taking place at Nuit Blanche.

Where: Old Market Square, behind the Cube Stage

Not quite a park, the Skate Spot at Old Market Square was created by skaters for skaters as a piece of “skateable furniture” that provides a space that inspires creativity. The sculptural piece is designed for skateboarders of all levels and doubles as a visual element for all to enjoy.

Skate Spot was made possible with funding support from the Province of Manitoba’s Arts, Culture and Sport In Community Fund and the City of Winnipeg, and designed with the help of landscape architects Scatliff + Miller + Murray.

“Early skateboarding culture in Winnipeg found a home at Old Market Square, and we’re excited to give the new generation a great reason to come back” says David Pensato, Exchange District BIZ executive director. “Skate Spot was designed by people in the community to be a little bit different from what’s currently available in Winnipeg. It’s a little more ‘street’ and a little less formal, which fits the Exchange District perfectly. It also has some great visual appeal as a sculpture, whether you skate it or use it as a selfie prop.”

If you’re having trouble relaying your location to a friend, just gently remind them that you’re at the Spot, behind the Cube, in the Square.
