70 Arthur Street: A Creative Epicentre in the Exchange

A world full of life and creativity awaits inside this historic Exchange District building.

The brick warehouse at 70 Arthur Street stands tall, a reflection of Winnipeg’s industrial past and its creative present. Grand in its size and stature, its impressive appearance is matched by the energy and innovation thriving within its walls.

Designed by prominent architect James Henry Cadham and built between 1899 and 1911, this Richardsonian-Romanesque warehouse was commissioned by Robert Jones Whitla for his booming dry goods business. The aptly named Whitla Building (sometimes called the Silpit Building) expanded twice to accommodate the growing trade industry, adding two stories in 1904 and another addition in 1911. Today, 70 Arthur Street remains one of the largest historic warehouses in downtown Winnipeg, but now, it’s brimming with businesses and creatives.

A true embodiment of the Exchange District’s reputation as a hub for artistry and innovation, entrepreneurs, artists, and professionals call 70 Arthur Street home. In the many offices, studios, and commercial spaces, 70 Arthur Street becomes a community meeting place and a neighbourhood hub.

Pop by on the First Friday of each month and find each studio alive with activity as artists open their doors to share their passion and creative works with the public.
